My Beloved Brother
The philosopher Laozi (Lao Tse) long ago instructed us that "a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step". The disassociation of the College from having Lord Jeff as a mascot is just another step in the thousand mile journey that began when Amherst first admitted its first student of color almost two hundred years ago. In time, there may be those who will clamor for a change in the college name or a change in the name of the town. That will be their step along the thousand mile journey. But, for now, my step has been completed.
Now on to other journeys...
