It seems that with almost every day there is always something that contributes to the underlying racial malaise in this country. The most recent something is the Oscar nominations where only white lives (or white movie careers) seem to matter. Never mind that Sylvester Stallone is nominated for best supporting actor for a role that he has played six times before over a span of forty years, while the young African American director and the movie itself were "knocked-out" of the competition. But this should not be surprising. It is still a country that has its preferences. Nevertheless, I found all this to be troubling.
This is troubling to me because the young African American director who directed Rocky Balboa in Creed just happens to be a "Home Boy". You can read about him in
Of course, Ryan Coogler made his first big splash directing Fruitvale Station which focused on the events that led to the death of Oscar Grant at the hands of a BART police officer. The death of Oscar Grant was troubling enough, but this past week another "something" cropped up to contribute to my own racial malaise. Please see
In light of this latest development associated with the life of Oscar Grant, and in light of the continued lack of gun control in this country, I sometimes wonder: How many times can a heart break?
