Happy New Year, Everyone!
Over the holidays, I experienced some down time which allowed me to spend some precious moments watching Country Music Television (CMT). While watching a few videos featuring Kenny (Chesney), Blake (Shelton), and a few other established artists, my viewing was startled by the following
Wanting to know about this Rhiannon Giddens, I turned to Wikipedia to learn that she was a member of the Grammy Award winning Carolina Chocolate Drops whose country music roots are as deep as any I have seen. You can see it yourself in Cornbread and Butterbeans
and more recently in Country Girl
Perhaps, it is my Oklahoma roots showing, but discovering Rhiannon Giddens and the Carolina Chocolate Drops was a rather pleasant holiday gift that came from out of the blue. It was refreshing and at the same time sobering. It reminded me of the music my Canadian Cousins played up in Amber Valley and it also reminded me of the deep abiding faith and respect of others that runs through so much of the heartland. Thus, when I saw Rhiannon's tribute to the South Carolina shooting victims, I too looked forward to the day when we would cry no more.
Peace,
Everett "Skip" Jenkins
