Let Us Not Descend Into the Abyss

Composed and posted on March 3, 2016

Peter,

I agree that to a great extent the "chickens have come home to roost" for the Republican Party these days.

However, recently, I have found myself immersed in reviewing what transpired in 1936 in Germany and elsewhere.  I listen to the debates and see what transpires at the rallies and I feel as though there are hints of those times in the times of today.  And so, while Mitt Romney and other Republicans may indeed have "sinned" by their actions in recent years, those sins should not be compounded by allowing a Donald Trump to be seriously considered for President.  He needs to be sent back into the dark abyss before he takes the country into the abyss with him.  So yes, if Mitt speaks up to hasten Trump's return to political obscurity, then I shall applaud him for it.

Peace,

Everett "Skip" Jenkins

While Trump is most certainly a dangerous phony and fraud, not to mention a bigot, isn’t Mitt’s speech more than disingenuous? He courted Trump’s support four years ago and was very much a party to the GOP’s veiled racist appeals of the past (the infamous 47% comment among others). All of the Republicans now condemning Trump’s inability to outright condemn the KKK…are they fighting the Party’s voter suppression efforts that raise the barriers for minority participation in elections because they know those populations vote overwhelmingly for Democrats? Are they now going to fight to restore the Voting Rights Act? I’m sorry, but Trump is the logical culmination of the GOP’s relentless efforts to delegitimize our first black President. How many of them called “bullshit” when Trump was going after Obama’s birth certificate? Not many. So, while I agree with much of the GOP criticism of Trump, they’re too little too late. They set this fire and now they’re trying to stomp it out.

Peter

For those who yearn for a more "civil" society, I think we all must say today,

God Bless, Mitt Romney
